FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Do you remove live trees?
No, we do not cut down live trees for our firewood; we only use trees that have already fallen. If you have a tree that you feel needs to be removed, we recommend you contact Hernandez Tree Removal Service (https://hernandeztreeservicesva.com/) or ER Tree Services (https://ertreeservicesva.com/).
  • Will you cut up a tree that has fallen on my property?
Generally, no, we do not; we are not a licensed tree removal company. If a tree has branches that interfere with your power lines, phone line, or home, we usually cannot assist, and we recommend one of the service providers described earlier. If the fallen tree is in an open space, it will depend on the size of the tree, as not all equipment can process extremely large trees.
  • Is there a cost for the firewood?
No, the firewood we provide is free of charge. Our mission is to support families in need by supplying free firewood for heating.
  • What areas do you serve?
We serve families in Page, Rockingham, and Shenandoah counties in Virginia.
  • How can I volunteer or donate to Firewood4Families?
We welcome volunteers and donations! Please visit our website for more information on how to get involved or donate. Your support helps us continue to provide firewood to families in need.
  • What type of wood do you provide?
We primarily provide hardwoods such as oak and hickory, which are ideal for heating. All wood is seasoned and split, ready for use.
  • Can I request specific types of wood?
While we try to accommodate specific requests, the availability of certain types of wood may vary. We prioritize ensuring all families receive adequate firewood for heating.
  • How is the firewood delivered?
Our volunteers deliver the firewood directly to your home. We will coordinate with you to ensure a convenient delivery time.
  • Do you provide firewood year-round?
We primarily operate during the colder months to ensure families have sufficient heating resources. However, you can contact us anytime to check current availability.
  • What should I do if I have a large amount of fallen wood I’d like to donate?
Please contact us with details about the wood you have available. We will assess the situation and coordinate with you for possible pickup or drop-off.
  • Is the firewood safe for indoor fireplaces and wood stoves?
Yes, all our firewood is seasoned and split, making it safe for use in indoor fireplaces and wood stoves. Properly seasoned wood burns more efficiently and produces less creosote buildup.
  • What happens if I run out of firewood mid-season?
If you find yourself in need of more firewood during the heating season, please contact us. We will do our best to fulfill additional requests as resources allow.
  • How long does it take for wood to be ready to be used as firewood?
Generally, it takes about 6 months. For harder woods like maple or oak, it can take up to a year for the wood to try completely. Factors like the diameter of the log, the amount of sunlight, ambient temperature, and moisture in the environment affect the length of time. We only provide firewood we are confident is ready to be used upon delivery and produces minimal smoke. Wood that is too saturated will smolder and produce too much smoke that is particularly harmful.
