Use of Firewood as Heat

In Virginia

Firewood remains a significant heating source in the Appalachian region of Virginia, especially in rural areas. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that while natural gas and electricity are Virginia's dominant heating sources, many Appalachian households use wood as a primary or supplementary heating source. This is partly due to the abundant forest resources in the region, which provide an accessible and economical source of firewood.  Solar, wind, and renewables offer superior environmental benefits, and firewood is an economical and more planet-friendly alternative than coal or heating oil.  Renewable energy is not common in the Appalachian region yet, but I look forward to the time that is the norm.

About 2.7% of households in Virginia use wood as their primary heating source, which is higher in the more rural and forested Appalachian areas. This region's reliance on firewood is attributed to its geography and the availability of wood from local forests. Firewood is often used alongside other heating methods, such as propane or electric heaters, to provide warmth during the colder months.

The use of firewood for heating is deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of the Appalachian communities, where many residents prefer the self-sufficiency and lower cost associated with harvesting their own wood. Firewood provides a reliable heat source during power outages, which can be more common in these mountainous areas due to severe weather conditions.
